Modest Mouse ~ February 19, 2018 @ The Arlington Theatre

Missed the Boat Some experiences are hard to describe with words. Sometimes you really do need to be there. Hopefully you were when Modest Mouse arrived at the Arlington Theatre for a truly otherworldly performance. Modest Mouse is known for their weird take on indie rock. As far as indie bands go, they are pretty far out there. This becomes very apparent in their live performance. With only six studio albums under their belt, their hit list is quite extensive. And they just about played every one of them at this sold-out show. Truly mesmerizing, Modest Mouse teased the crowd before the haunting opening cords to “3rd Planet” echoed through the theatre, bring the excited crowd to an excited hush. With the use of strategically colored and placed lights, lasers made dramatic effects in an already dramatic song. The song set the tone for the rest of the evening. With a diverse set list full of ethereal songs strongly highlighted with colorful beams of light, Modest Mouse l...

Girls Rock SB! Benefit @ The Marjorie Luke ~ February 23, 2013

Always Leave On a High Note Girls R ock SB! is a local organization that aims to empower young girls through music. To raise money for scholarships and instruments for their summer and after school all-girls music program, the organization hosted a night of music and dance. MC’d by KLITE’s Catherine Remak, the night was split into two short acts. Each act was made up of five short sets, very accommodating of the young audience and their attention spans. The first performance of act one was a 3-piece band made up of well-known local artists. The cherry on top though was the aerial performance on silk. The young aerialist was top notched and performed what seemed like death defying stunts. The next three performances were made up of a black and white music video, an all male high school cover rock band with young female dancing ballerinas, and an all male 2-piece acoustic set. The performances were all entertaining, but I would have liked to have seen at least one all-gi...

Ghost Tiger @ 7 Bar & Kitchen ~ March 7, 2013

A Little Room to Breathe photo by paul dunkley Packed doesn’t quite explain it. “Packed like sardines” might be a better description. For a soft opening, 7 Bar an d Kitchen had to be pushing capacity. The large diverse crowd was made up of folksters (folk meets hipsters), entrepreneurs, college kids, parents, and SB local music buffs. It was one of the most diverse crowds I have ever seen in SB. I am not sure if the crowd came for the opening of the new hot spot in the funk zone, or the indie folk band playing the event. My guess is a combo of both. photo by paul dunkley The band, Ghost Tiger, emerged on the Santa Barbara scene a couple years back (according to my research), fresh faced and wide eyed. The five-piece is made up of Alixandra Macmillan-Fiedel (vocals), Emma Houston (keyboards), Kevin Evans (bass), Chris Norlinger (guitar), and Chris Stansell (drums). A fusion of folk and electronic pop, GT has a trendy indie folk so...
